Student feature: Danish Zulkiflee

Martin graduate Danish Zulkiflee currently works as a travel consultant for Escape Travel, helping create the perfect escape for each of his clients.

Just a short while ago, Danish had no experience whatsoever in the travel industry – or with travel in general – but things have changed. By completing his Diploma of Travel and Tourism, he was able to gain industry expertise and plenty of practical experience over the 30 week course.

“Martin has given me a deep insight into how this industry works and operates,” says Danish. “The teachers are more like mentors; they’ve each had many years of experience out in the field.”

We asked Danish to share a few more of his insights with us, and he kindly obliged.

What’s the most valuable thing you learned?

“The most valuable thing I learned at Martin is that there will always be change; be it for better or for worse. It is up to us to adapt ourselves to the new environment.”

For Danish, this change is reflected in Martin’s ‘fast-track’ full-time study mode in which there is a change of subjects every few weeks. This allows students to fully master one subject intensively before moving to the next, building on their learnings each time.

What skills do you see as essential to working in the travel industry?

“Being able to successfully tackle a steep learning curve is an essential skill,” he says. “There is always something new in the world to learn about, so there is always something new in the travel industry.”

Keeps it exciting! Never a dull moment in travel, that’s for sure.

What is your favourite thing about working in this industry?

Danish is not one to shy away from a challenge, and his favourite thing about his career is the high-paced environment.

“Whether I need to hit targets, get a travel visa application approved on time, or have to deal with flight changes,” he says, “these challenges allow me to push my skills to the limits and test them. “Always having something to strive for is my favourite thing about this industry.”

So what’s on your bucket list?

Since graduating, Danish has travelled to New Caledonia and Fiji on board a Carnival cruise, and he has big travel plans to go much, much further.

“Bucket list? Everywhere! At the top of the list are the Norwegian Northern Lights, Canada’s Inside Passage and the Rocky Mountaneer, and Antarctic trekking,” he says. “This industry has opened my eyes up to a whole new world out there and it’s just waiting to be explored.”

There are clearly plenty of adventures in store for this young man.

The world is your oyster, Danish.
