The games are coming to the Gold Coast

The Commonwealth Games are coming to the Gold Coast in April 2018!

The Games are globally recognised and the opportunities that this will afford the Gold Coast and Queensland are limitless.

To ensure that such a massive event goes off without a hitch, organisers are requesting the help of thousands of volunteers and contract workers. Australia’s largest job placement company, SEEK will play a big role in supporting recruitment, providing the technology that will “support the hiring of over 1,000 staff, 15,000 volunteers and up to 45,000 contractors.”

Martin students, particularly those studying tourism and events, have the potential to gain some truly amazing work experience as a part of this historical event (not to mention collect some remarkable memories along the way).

Travel & tourism:

Hosting the Games will have a huge effect on tourism for area, with hundreds of thousands expected to attend the world-renowned sporting event. The Gold Coast’s population is set to more than double in numbers.

For students in our travel and tourism faculty, an influx of tourists brings with it a wealth of opportunities. This is your chance to get some unforgettable work experience under your belt.

During the Games, when half the population is ‘just visiting’, there will be a high demand for:

– Tour guides & operators

– Travel consultants

– Other tourism professionals

Visitors will be expecting to see and do plenty during their stay – and you’ll be the perfect person to help them out.

When it comes to events, they don’t get much larger than this one. For events students, working or volunteering at the Games will truly be a once in a lifetime experience.

The roles required at the Games will be diverse (and many), with volunteers and staff working across a multitude of brand new venues that are currently in development.

Whether it’s the grand opening ceremony, a sporting event or an after-party, your skills and experience as an events student will be essential to ensuring a smooth delivery of the world-class event.

Get involved:

For those of you who are keen to be a part of the action, the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games are currently accepting expressions of interest for volunteer positions. Fill out the pre-registration form on the volunteer page here or ask your facilitator about how you can get involved.
