Student feature: Rena Ting

Wondering where a course in web design and development from Martin can take you?

We caught up with web design graduate Rena Ting to learn more about her creative career path after Martin. Rena currently works as a graphic and web designer at the Selenic Group, a digital agency in Melbourne specialising in creative design, web development and online marketing.

What was the most valuable thing you learned in your course?

“Web design and development process,” says Rena, “and definitely coding skills!”

What skills do you see as essential for working in the tech/design industry?

Rena cites self-learning skills as being the most essential for this fast-paced sector – you’ve got to stay abreast of innovations and new technologies. “Finding the right tools and resources to keep yourself up to date with industry is important,” she says.

What is your favourite thing about studying/working in this industry?

“It’s always interesting,” says Rena. “You’ll meet people from all different industries and backgrounds, and work to solve their problems.”

Do you have any advice for those hoping to get into the industry?

According to Rena, individuals who will succeed in this industry are those who are curious and motivated enough to keep learning after graduation. “They must be proactive with learning, and exploring the field,” says Rena. “Curiosity to find solutions is really important.”

What do you predict will be the next big movements in web design?

“As website building platforms like WordPress become more common and easier to use, building a website will become much more accessible to the general public,” says Rena. “However, business-savvy professionals with financial capacity will always look for professional design to achieve the highest quality user-experience.”

Can you share with us some examples of your work?

“You can visit my agency’s website here,” says Rena. “I’ve worked on 90% of the web design portfolio, including my agency’s website design.”

A big thank you to Rena for sharing with us – your work looks awesome and you’re undoubtedly on the path to some exciting creative things in the future.
