Be like Jeff – try out an internship

Posted on 31/08/2016 by admin

Imagine getting to try out your ideal career – just for a month or two. That’s essentially what internships are. They allow you to test the waters, get some essential experience under your belt, and ultimately, decide if you’ve found the career path for you.

At Martin, all eligible students are given the opportunity to undertake an internship as part of their study program, which is great for several reasons:

1. Internships give you valuable work experience and real-world skills

2. They give you a taste of what it’s like to work in your chosen industry

3. They allow you to make connections with people already working in that industry

4. They look great on a resume and give you an added advantage when you’re looking for employment

We caught up with Jeff, a Martin student who is currently completing an internship with one of our very own talented graphic designers.

Tell us a bit about your internship role and the daily tasks you are responsible for.

“My role is assisting the graphic designer with various tasks such as…

-making changes to various marketing materials

-designing newsletter templates

-making changes to flyers/posters

-assisting with creating signs

-adding logos to course cards”

What has been the best part of the internship so far?

“The best part has been learning tips and tricks that improve productivity when you’re using the various software programs,” says Jeff, “as well as best practice workflows in a team-based environment.”

What has been your biggest takeaway?

There’s been a few! Firstly, “being exposed to the busy tempo of a graphic design environment,” says Jeff, and also “learning how to manage accuracy and productivity in a deadline driven industry.”

Do you think your internship has prepared you for a career in the industry? How?

“It has been a great stepping stone for me,” says Jeff. “I’ve been exposed to real-world graphic design projects, worked with a fantastic graphic designer, and have developed pieces of work which demonstrate my own creative skills.”

Well Jeff, we’re really happy to have you. We’re thrilled that you are learning new things every day and enjoying the experience. Thank you for sharing with us!

So how can you start your internship?
